IIT Bombay launched new Centre of Excellence on Membrane Technologies for Desalination, Brine Management, and Water Recycling

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has launched a new Centre of Excellence on Membrane Technologies for Desalination, Brine Management, and Water Recycling. The centre was inaugurated on July 21, 2023, by Prof. S. Sudarshan, Deputy Director (AIA), IIT Bombay; Prof. Milind Atrey, Dean (R&D), IIT Bombay; Dr. Praveen Arora, Head, Water Technologies Cell, DST and Prof. Subhankar Karmarkar, Head, ESED, IIT Bombay.

The new centre will focus on developing innovative membrane technologies for desalination, water recycling, and brine management. It will also work on the incubation and commercialization of developed technologies and products. The centre will be supported by a team of researchers from IIT Bombay and other leading academic institutions in India and abroad.

The launch of the new centre is a significant step towards addressing the water crisis in India. India is a water-stressed country, and the demand for water is expected to increase in the coming years. Desalination and water recycling are two key technologies that can help to meet the growing demand for water.

The new centre will play a vital role in developing these technologies and making them more affordable and accessible. It will also help to create jobs in the water sector and contribute to the economic development of India.

Here are some of the key goals of the new centre:

  • To develop innovative membrane technologies for desalination, water recycling, and brine management.
  • To incubate and commercialize developed technologies and products.
  • To train the next generation of water professionals.
  • To create a knowledge network on water technologies.
  • To promote the adoption of water-efficient technologies.

The new centre is a welcome initiative by IIT Bombay. It is a step in the right direction to address the water crisis in India. The centre has the potential to make a significant impact on the water sector in India and beyond.
