Parliamentary Panel asks Health Ministry to set-up Helpline to Counsel Students who Fail Exams

A parliamentary panel has asked the Health Ministry to set up a 24x7 helpline to counsel students who fail exams. The panel said that the helpline should be staffed by qualified professionals who can provide emotional support and advice to students who are struggling to cope with the stress of failing exams.

The panel also recommended that the government should launch a public awareness campaign to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage students to seek help if they are feeling overwhelmed.

The panel's recommendations are in response to the rising number of suicides among students in India. In 2022, more than 10,000 students committed suicide in India, and many of these suicides were linked to exam stress.

The panel said that the government needs to take urgent action to address the mental health crisis among students. The helpline and public awareness campaign are two important steps that the government can take to help students who are struggling with exam stress.

Here are some of the reasons why students fail exams and feel stressed:

  • Lack of preparation: Students may not be adequately prepared for exams, either because they did not study enough or because they did not understand the material.
  • Pressure from parents and teachers: Students may feel pressure from their parents and teachers to succeed in exams, which can add to their stress levels.
  • Personal problems: Students may be dealing with personal problems, such as family issues or health problems, which can also affect their performance in exams.
  • Mental health issues: Students with mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression, may find it difficult to cope with the stress of exams.

If you are a student who is struggling with exam stress, there are a few things you can do:

  • Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, or counselor.
  • Seek professional help from a therapist or counselor.
  • Join a support group for students who are struggling with exam stress.
  • Take care of yourself by eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly.
  • Set realistic goals for yourself and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Remember, you are not alone. Many students struggle with exam stress, and there are resources available to help you cope.
