UGC & NMC Asks Colleges, Universities to Mark Anti-Ragging Week till 18 August

The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) have asked colleges and universities to observe an anti-ragging week from August 12 to August 18. This is in the wake of the death of a first-year student from Jadavpur University allegedly linked to ragging.

The UGC and NMC have issued a joint circular asking colleges and universities to take a number of measures to prevent ragging. These measures include:

  • Organizing awareness programs and workshops on anti-ragging.
  • Setting up anti-ragging committees in all colleges and universities.
  • Sensitizing students, faculty members, and staff about the dangers of ragging.
  • Taking strict action against those found guilty of ragging.

The UGC and NMC have also warned that colleges and universities that fail to take adequate measures to prevent ragging will face action.

Ragging is a serious problem in Indian colleges and universities. It is a form of hazing that involves humiliating and abusing new students. Ragging can have serious physical and psychological consequences for victims, and it can even lead to death.

The UGC and NMC's anti-ragging week is a welcome initiative. It is important to raise awareness about the dangers of ragging and to take steps to prevent it from happening. We hope that this initiative will help to create a safe and harassment-free environment for students in colleges and universities.

If you are a student or a faculty member and you witness ragging, please report it to the authorities immediately. You can also call the National Anti-Ragging Helpline (1800-11-8039) for help.
