Maharashtra is set to get 11 new government medical colleges. The state cabinet has given its nod to the proposal to set up these colleges in nine districts. The new colleges will be located in Gadchiroli, Bhandara, Buldhana, Washim, Wardha, Amravati, Jalna, Thane, and Palghar.
The state government has allocated Rs 4,366 crore for the construction of these new colleges. The colleges are expected to be ready by 2023-24.
The new medical colleges will help to increase the number of MBBS seats in the state. Currently, there are 24 government medical colleges in Maharashtra with a total of 5,125 MBBS seats. The addition of 11 new colleges will increase the number of MBBS seats to 6,245.
The new medical colleges will also help to address the shortage of doctors in the state. According to a recent survey, there is a shortage of about 30,000 doctors in Maharashtra. The new colleges will help to fill this shortage.
The state government has also announced that it will provide financial assistance to students from economically weaker sections to study in these new medical colleges. This will help to ensure that everyone has access to quality medical education.
The setting up of new medical colleges is a welcome move by the state government. It will help to improve the medical infrastructure in the state and address the shortage of doctors.
