NHRC to take suo motu action if authorities fail to submit reports on Jadavpur University student's death

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to Jadavpur University over the death of Swapnadip Kundu. The NHRC has sought a report from the university within four weeks on the steps taken to prevent ragging and the measures in place to ensure the safety of students.

The NHRC's notice comes after the death of Swapnadip Kundu, a first-year student of Jadavpur University, on August 10, 2023. The student's family has alleged that he was ragged to death by seniors.

The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and has issued a notice to the university, the West Bengal government, and the police. The NHRC has asked the university to submit a report on the steps taken to prevent ragging and the measures in place to ensure the safety of students.

The NHRC has also asked the West Bengal government and the police to submit a report on the action taken against the accused in the case. The NHRC has said that it will take suo motu action if the authorities fail to submit the reports within the stipulated time.

The NHRC's notice is a welcome step. It shows that the NHRC is taking the issue of ragging seriously and is committed to ensuring the safety of students in universities.
